FG Promises Potable Water To All Nigerians
Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, the Minister of Water Resources, said on Thursday that the Federal Government was working towards ensuring potable water access to all Nigerians.
Ochekpe said this while inaugurating 40 latrines and two boreholes in AngwarBagudu and Karoga communities in Chikun local government area of Kaduna State.
She said this would help tackle the effect of poor sanitation and hygiene practices by community members.
She said the Federal Government had observed that poor sanitation and hygiene had been contributing to the outbreak of diseases.
She said open defecation, often practised in villages, had also been responsible for sanitation and hygiene-related diseases.
Sarah said the AngwarBagudu and Karoga community had been selected for the pilot implementation of the Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) by the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Centre (RWSSC).
Sarah advocated for water transfer technology, adding that this would tackle water sector challenges and improve service delivery to Nigerians.
“Access to potable water is a huge investment, but we are utilising avenue like the institute to provide water for Nigerians in the rural areas.”
She urged the benefiting communities to ensure that the projects were maintained as sanitation is a collective responsibility.
Commending the Minister, the Community Leader of Karoga village, MrTanko Jagaba, said the development was an indication that the Federal Government cares for rural dwellers.
“As a community, we feel honoured by what the Federal Government has done; we were remembered for good life project which is water.
“We are grateful and we hope this project would open more ways to development in this village.”
On his part, the District Head of AngwarBagudu in DaminshiVillage, also commended the Federal Government, saying that the projects would improve sanitation and hygiene practices in the community.
“We have been involved in open defecation which is responsible for the outbreak of diseases in this village,’’ he said
