Ohuabunwa Seeks Decongestion Of PH Prisons
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CAN Television, Sir Godfrey Ohuabunwa has called for the decongestion of the Port Harcourt Prison, noting that the squalid state of prisons across the country has worsened the conditions of inmates rather than serving the intended purpose of rehabilitation into the society.
Ohuabunwa made the appeal in Port Harcourt, recently, during the official commissioning of a church project built by the United Christian Prison Ministries (UCPM) for inmates of the Port Harcourt prison.
Speaking as the chairman of the event, he decried the level of congestion at the prison, pointing out that the prison, which was originally built to accommodate 800 inmates, now houses over 3000 inmates.
He attributed the ugly trend to poor dispensation of justice, which resulted in inmates spending years in prison while awaiting trials.
He said the government should improve on the dispensation of justice, to avail most inmates who had been unjustly delayed by the defects in the system of justice delivery to have a reunion with their families and the society.
He noted that most inmates languishing in prison custodies committed crime and urged a revolution within concerned authorities to respond to the imperatives of justice.
Ohuabunwa also canvassed improved infrastructure and welfare packages for prison inmates, and commended the United Christian Prison Ministries (UCPM) for their gesture.
He also called on corporate organizations and multinational bodies, to embark on the resuscitation of prison as part of their corporate social responsibilities, noting that those languishing in prisons were Nigerians who had something to offer to the development of the country.
