Gombe Presents Vehicles, Tractors To Boost Transport, Agric
The government of
Gombe State has presented 1,200 vehicles and 200 tractors to groups and individuals on loans to boost transportation and agriculture in the state.
The Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo made the presentation under Talba Empowerment Scheme (TES) in the State capital recently.
Dankwambo said the intervention was aimed at reducing the hardship faced in the transportation sector.
He said the 1,050 eight-seat tricycles were meant for town service while 100 Suzuki Alto cars are to serve as taxis.
He said 50 buses would be given to the State Transport Corporation for interstate services, while 200 tractors were given to farmers.
“The government decided to give out the cars, buses and the tractors as loans to individuals; the beneficiaries are expected to deposit 30 per cent of the total cost before collecting the vehicles.
“The government reduced 20 per cent of the total cost of the vehicles, while the taxi cost N2.6million, the tricycles would be sold at N553,021.
The governor said the tractors would be sold at N4 million, which was cost of purchase from Pakistan as against Nigeria’s price of N7 million.
The Commissioner of Finance, Alhaji Muhammed Hassan, said the economic empowerment scheme would create 3,494 direct jobs and pave way for income generation.
He said the vehicles would be managed by the newly established Gombe Leasing Company, adding that the vehicles would be withdrawn from beneficiaries who defaulted in payment.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Dahiru Buba-Biri, thanked the governor for developing the agricultural sector.
He said the tractors would boost agriculture and assured the government that the tractors would be used for the intended purpose.
The Youth and Poverty Alleviation counterpart, Alhaji Mijinyawa Labaran, said government would establish an assembly plant for the tricycles where youths would be trained.
The National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Najib Yasim, thanked the government for the provision of the vehicles.
He praised the government for its intervention in road infrastructure, saying, it would reduce the rate of road traffic accidents in the state.
