National Dev: NEPAD Harps On Good Governance
The acting Chief Execu
tive of New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Dr Samuel Faseyi says good governance would help to enhance the nation’s development.
Faseyi, who stated this in an interview with newsmen said that dedication to duty among Nigerians in public and private sectors would promote peace, unity and security of the country.
“Government is becoming more inclusive and structures are being established to ensure that the public is aware of what they are doing to promote good governance in the country.
“I therefore wish to implore stakeholders to come up with activities that will enhance development and create room for good governance and promote peace and stability.
“If you can get your government right, make commitment and with that the area of complaints and problems will be minimised.
“I advise everybody to practice good governance to reduce the challenge of insecurity the country is facing and embrace the government efforts to make the country great,’’ he said.
The NEPAD’s chief executive stressed the need for Nigerians to put more efforts in ensuring stability in the polity, noting that this would strengthen the economy of the country.
Faseyi, who said that poverty was reducing in the country, pointed out that poverty reduction was a gradual process.
“You cannot say poverty is not reducing in Nigeria; it is, but it needs a kind of sustainable environment.’’
He said that for a nation to have a sustainable environment, the country must be able to manage the oceans freshwater system, land and air space so as to improve its natural resources.
Faseyi said that the country had improved in the power sector, while the economy of the country had improved both at the state and local levels.
He said that programmes and projects aimed at poverty eradication in the country had made some positive impacts.
He said that NEPAD was established in 2001 to improve the standard of living of the majority of the population.
He said that the mission and mandate was to ensure that African leaders take responsibility for and own their development trajectory under a partnership arrangement that would be mutually benefited to African states.
