VC Explains De-Accreditation Of Courses In Ndu
The Vice Chancellor, of
Niger Delta University (NDU), Prof. Humphrey Ogoni says poor funding is hampering the smooth operation of the institution, which has resulted to withdrawal of some of its courses by the National University Commission.(NUC).
Prof. Ogoni who stated this, while addressing the State House of Assembly Committee on Education, said the problem of the University was further compounded with the last year’s flood which made its permanent site inaccessible .
He said the University needed funds for the new faculties of Laboratory Science, Marine and Microbiology blocks to be built in the school, saying that management was doing everything to meet the NUC standard to re-accredit the courses withdrawn by the Commission
Following the submissions made by the University administrator, the State Assembly Committee on Education directed the management of the University to uplift its standard by ensuring that the courses recently withdrawn from the school by the NUC were re-accredited..
The committee which was reviewing the implementation of this year’s budget by Ministeries, Departments and Agencies, (MDAs) under its jurisdiction at the Assembly complex decried the inability of the institution to access the funds duly appropriated to it in the budget, stressing that the university should also be covered by the State of Emergency declared by the state government in the educational sector.
Interacting with the Education Secretaries in the local government areas earlier, chairman of the committee, Hon. Johnson Imela expressed shock that pupils sat on bare floors to learn in some private schools, and enjoined the Secretaries to liaise with the relevant authorities to make the learning environment more conducive.
The Education Secretaries on their part informed the committee of the challenges they were facing , ranging from lack of adequate academic staff in the primary and basic secondary schools, official vehicles and speed boats for routine supervision.
