Commissioner Wants Monarchs To Support Sanitation Programmes
The Katsina State
Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Jamilu Danmusa, has solicited the support of traditional rulers for sanitation programmes aimed at improving the health of the citizens.
Danmusa made the call while inspecting Musawa township market project and others in Matazu, Kafur, Funtua, Dandume, Bakori and Faskari Local Government areas.
The commissioner said the call became necessary in order to safeguard public health as well as encourage people to participate in environmental sustainability programmes.
He urged the traditional rulers to educate their subjects on the importance of environmental protection, sanitation and other health issues.
According to the commissioner, the fight against desert encroachment can only be won through joint efforts between individuals, communities and institutions.
The commissioner said the felling of trees, disposing wastes in markets, streets and blocking of water ways constituted health hazards.
Alhaji Tanimu Kira, Chairman of Transition Committee, Musawa Local Government Area, cautioned residents against indiscriminate disposal of wastes in markets and the streets.
Kira called for joint efforts by individuals and groups to sanitise towns and cities by embarking on environmental protection programmes.
He urged youth associations to participate in the monthly sanitation exercises recently reintroduced in the state.
He specifically called on residents to desist from blocking drains and other waterways, adding that culprits would be prosecuted.
The council boss commended the State Government for constructing waste disposal centres in the area and urged the people to utilise them.
In Malumfashi, the Councilor representing Yaba Ward, Malam Aliyu Usman, appealed to state and local governments to provide refuse collection centre in Marabar Kankara market.
