Amaechi Urges Writers To Mirror Society
Last weekend, South-South office of the African In
dependent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Staff, Government House, Sir Tony Okocha.
The group was led by its new South-South Director of Operations, Mr. Barri Peremongo, who commended the development efforts of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi’s administration, and the peaceful atmosphere it has provided for media outfits to operate.
The Director of Operations of AIT also pledged the support of the group in promoting good governance in the state. Reacting, Sir Okocha thanked them for the visit and assured them that the Amaechi-led administration would do all in its power to meet the expectation of the citizenry.
On the same Friday, Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Owene Wonodi addressed newsmen over plans by some youths to form a parallel National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN). He said the government recognised the NYCN leadership of Kingsley Igbanichuka.
According to the Commissioner, since the tenure of Igbanichuka was yet to elapse, the new body remains illegal, as he urged security agencies in the state to arrest any group capable of breaching public peace in the state.
Governor Amaechi returned to the state at the weekend and immediately commenced state duties. On Sunday last week, he carried out a tour of projects sites in the company of DSTV media team.
The project tour continued on Monday with the DSTV media crew. However, later in the day the governor presided over an exco meeting which dragged on into the night.
On Tuesday, Governor Amaechi flagged off the sixth edition of the Port Harcourt Book Festival at Presidential Hotel. He tasked writers to mirror the society, regretting that present writers have failed to correct societal ills.
“Outside writers like Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe that responded to society… who else among the current writers are doing such a thing?”, the governor queried.
The governor also charged the organisers of the book festival to ensure that the programme was organised independent of government support. He said he would like to see the festival continue after his exit from office in 2015.
The Rivers State Chief Executive played the Chief Host at the Nigeria Oil and Gas Trade and Investment Forum 2013, at Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone in Eleme Local Government Area, on Thursday.
He used the forum which attracted the Ministers of Trade and Investment, Transport and Petroleum to woo foreign investors into Rivers State, “I charge investors to take advantage of the peaceful investment, conducive business climate put in place by my administration”.
Amaechi also praised the efforts of the managers at the Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone for the success recorded so- far” I think the operators of the Oil and Gas Free Zone are doing well interms of capturing and integrating investors in the development of Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry”.
On Friday Governor Amaechi received Senate President David Mark who was in the state to attend the 2013 Nigeria Oil and Gas Trade and Investment Forum at Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone, Eleme.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
