NEMA Charges North_East Stakeholders On Emergencies
The National Emergency
Management Agency (NEMA) has expressed the need for more collaboration and cooperation among stakeholders in the North-East in tackling emergencies.
The Director- General of the Agency, Alhaji Mohammed Sani, made the call recently in Yola at a consultative meeting with stakeholders from the zone on flood preparedness, mitigation and response.
Sani said disaster management required effective collaboration and synergy among stakeholders.
He was represented by the Director, Planning, Research and Forecasting of the Agency, Alhaji Alhassan Nuhu.
He said the Yola forum with stakeholders was aimed at ensuring adequate preparedness and effective synergy among stakeholders, as a way to reduce the impact of the predicted flooding this year.
“The interactive forum is intended to raise awareness and share experiences with a view to strengthening our mitigation and preparedness strategies.
“The forum will help to step down the awareness campaign of NIMET 2013 seasonal rainfall prediction to different localities in the zone.”
In his address of welcome, the North-East Coordinator of NEMA, Alhaji Mohammed Kanar, said the agency was committed to sensitising communities vulnerable to flooding and enhancing the response capacity of stakeholders.
This, he said, would enable them to respond effectively to adverse consequences of flooding.
Declaring the meeting open, Mr Amos Odewara, the representative of the Adamawa Government and Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Special Duties, lauded NEMA for its commitment to proactive measures in tackling emergencies.
He said the state government would support and work with the agency and other stakeholders in that direction.
