sociation of Nigeria (MWAN), has called on women to undertake regular cancer screening to save themselves from the consequences of late detection of the disease.
The association made the call in Uyo at a news conference on cancer awareness campaign as directed by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The Geneva-based WHO, had declared October as the month to raise global consciousness on cancer.
The President of MWAN, Dr Valerie Obot, said that early detection of cancer “saves life,” adding that breast cancer was manageable if it was detected early.
”MWAN uses this medium to once again remind women and the public that cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide.
“The common cancer that affects men and women includes breast, cervical, prostate, colorectal, liver and lung cancers.
‘’According to the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, in July 2010, developing countries have 80 per cent of global cancer.
“The minister said the countries have only five per cent cancer management resources is available and the major cause is lack of awareness.
“MWAN is calling for improved early detection of these cancers.
“It also passionately appeals to the government and all well-meaning Nigerians to help establish cancer diagnostic and treatment centres in the six geo-political zones of the country.’’
Obot said that the risk factors of the disease were high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, a lack of physical activity, tobacco use and alcohol misuse.
She advised that nurses and other middle-cadre health workers, including community health extension workers should be trained on detection and screening for breast and cervical cancers.
