Tonye Harry’s Death, Great National Loss – RSHA Press Corps
Members of the Rivers
State House of Assembly Press Corps have described the death of former Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tonye Ezekiel Harry as a great loss to the state and the country at large.
In a Press statement signed by Chairman and Secretary of the Press Corps, Pat Chuks Mefor and Ijeoma Tubosia, respectively, said the body noted that Harry’s death had created a vacuum in the state legislature that it would be difficult to fill.
“Tonye Harry’s death has, no doubt, robbed the Rivers State House of Assembly, the state and the country of an erudite politician par excellence, whose contribution to the growth of democracy cannot be quantified,” the statement said.
It also described the late lawmaker as “a bridge- builder who used his wealth of experience to forge a warm relationship, not only between lawmakers, but also with the press corps”.
While urging other lawmakers in the state to borrow a leaf from the deceased, the statement noted that the nation’s democracy demands a lot more from lawmakers to stabilize the polity and ensure that the rule of law prevails at all times.
It continued that it all lawmakers in the country can be as concerned as the late former Speaker was for Nigeria’s democracy, a lot would be achieved faster than can be imagined.
The statement prayed God for the repose of the soul of the deceased, while also expressing its “profound condolence to his family, colleagues and the state, praying God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss”.
