State Burial For Harry …As Amaechi Condoles With Family
Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi has said that the state government would give a state burial to late Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Tonye Harry.
Governor Amaechi, who made the disclosure in Port Harcourt, yesterday during a condolence visit to his family, in company of some members of the State Executive Council and lawmakers, said the state government was prepared to participate in the state burial.
According to Amaechi, “the government is prepared to listen to the family and know what to do to assist the family, especially with the young children that he has’’.
While describing him as a “wonderful deputy speaker,” the governor said he was bereaved by the death of the former speaker and shocked over his sudden death.
The governor recalled that Harry had served as his deputy while he was speaker of the state House of Assembly between 1999-2007, noting that he was a wonderful personality.
“We were quite friendly, he was a wonderful deputy speaker, and I guess, he was also a wonderful speaker,” Amaechi said.
The governor said he was satisfied that Harry was a Christian as he prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
He told the family of late Harry that he and the people of the state shared in their loss and pain, saying “let me say to you that we have come to show our sympathy. We are all as bereaved as you are. Tonye’s death was a joke for me because I never thought that Tonye would die. When I was informed about his ill-health that night, I honestly thought it was a joke.”
Amaechi further recalled that all attempts to revive the former speaker failed as he stood by his hospital bed at Prof. Kelsey Harrison Hospital about a week before Harry was flown abroad for medical treatment.
But, however, disclosed that he was devastated when he was informed that the Kalabari-born politician could not make it, stating that he was speechless when finally the death of Harry was broken to him.
Responding, the family spokesman, Mr Tein Harry thanked Governor Amaechi and those who came with him for coming to sympathise with them in their moment of grief.
It would be recalled that late Tonye Harry was Speaker of the state House of Assembly from 2007 to 2011.
