NGO Sensitises Communities On Gender, Dev Laws
A non-governmental
organisation (NGO), Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), has embarked on a sensitisation of communities in Cross River State on gender and development laws.
Executive Director of the organisation, Dr Abiola Akiyode, who disclosed this in an interview in Calabar said the sensitisation campaign was being held in the three senatorial districts of the state.
She said there were several laws on development and gender in the state which people were not aware of.
The WARDC executive director said there was the need for proper orientation of the residents on these laws.
“We have discovered that there are laws already in existence in the state that are in favour of women and other members of the community, but people are not aware of such laws. So, we decided to embark on a sensitisation of the communities, for the members to take advantage of these laws to better their lives,’’ she said.
According to her, most of the direct beneficiaries of the laws had not adequately exploited them for their economic and social benefits, due to lack of awareness.
“For instance, the State Community and Social Development Agency Law 2010 has been in existence, but many communities have not exploited it to empower themselves,” she said.
Akiyode called on the communities to always question development agencies on their activities and insist on community participation in projects sited in their areas.
She urged every community to demand for a Community Liaison Officer for any project sited in the area, adding that such officers would always be available to explain issues.
The executive director also urged community leaders to liaise with the agencies in deciding projects to be sited in their communities, and how they would be executed.
“They should monitor the projects in their communities and ensure that they are in line with the development plans and needs of the people. “They should also insist that such projects are executed in accordance to specifications,” she added.
Akiyode said the programme had already taken off in the state’s southern senatorial district, beginning with the Calabar Municipality, Calabar South and Bakassi Local Government Areas.
