Stakeholders Demand Equitable Resource Distribution
The Federal Government
has been urged to ensure equitable distribution of resources to all communities in the Niger Delta.
At a five-day seminar on peace building in the Niger Delta organised by the Foundation for Partnership Initiative (FPI) in Port Harcourt, participants attributed the cause of crisis in the region to the absence of justice as well as greed among the ruling class.
Speaking with newsmen, the Strategic Programme Manager of the Foundation, Mrs Bose Eitokpah said the seminar was segmented to train peace builders in the different communities across the region.
She said that the trainees would be required to go into their different communities to preach the message of peace as well as identify impediments to peace.
Mrs Eitokpah said that since development could not occur in an atmosphere devoid of conflict, peace must be restored in the Niger Delta to enable it catch up with the rest of the world.
Also speaking, Mr. Nate Hake, a Senior Associate of the Fund for Peace said building peace across the Niger Delta has become necessary to checkmate another round of crisis in the region.
Mr Hake, said that another round of crisis in the region would disrupt development not only in the region but also the entire country, noting that PIND and other organisations were working hard to ensure the region was in peace.
He said that the peace builders will work with vulnerable groups across the region to identify those flash points.
Hake stressed the need for the people of the region to eschew their differences and work together to ensure that peace and stability reigned in the region.
