International Flight Commences At Enugu Airport
International flights to the newly upgraded Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, finally commenced last Saturday.
The Boeing 737-800 Ethiopian Airline with registration number ET-APL, was the first to touch the new tarmac of the airport.
The plane, which took off from Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, landed at exactly 12: 17pm.
Nigerians resident in Enugu State and neighbouring states from the South-East and South-South geo-political zones trooped to the international airport to witness the event.
Some of them who spoke to The Tide source described the moment as a feat finally achieved.
In his remarks, President Goodluck Jonathan said it was a promise kept.
President Jonathan spoke through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim.
He said, “Remember, many promises have been given on this airport by many administrations, but when President Jonathan came, he promised and today he has delivered.
“It is a dream come through for the people of South-East.”
The Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, said that she was happy the promise was fulfilled. “The people of the South-East would ever remain happy for this feat,” Oduah said.
The Aviation minister disclosed that already seven foreign airlines have indicated interest to commence operation at the airport.
Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum and Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, said upgrade of the airport to international status would definitely boost the economy of Enugu State and the entire South-East zone.
