A/Ibom Achieves 67% In Exclusive Breastfeeding
Akwa Ibom State Government said it has achieved 67 per cent in exclusive breast feeding practice in 2013.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emem Bassey, made this known Tuesday at a press briefing organised to mark the commencement of 2013 Breast Feeding Week in the state.
Bassey said that the figure was 42 per cent higher than the rate attained in 2012.
“This is is a great improvement and a mark of success in Akwa Ibom compared to the national rate of 13.6 per cent reported in the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) and Millennium Development Goalds (MDGs) Indicato, 2011, ” Bassey said.
The Commissioner said that the state had trained two thousand health workers across the 31 local government areas to ensure best practices in infant and young child feeding.
He said that the state had designated 24 maternity facilities as “Baby Friendly Centres” after meeting the expected requirements.
The Commissioner, however, said that in spite of the achievements, the state was still facing some challenges in infant and young child feeding practices.
He said that the state had low expected frequency of breast feeding of 46 per cent in a day on the scale of eight times a day.
The Commissioner said that only 36 per cent of mothers continued with breast feeding up to 18 months.
Bassey said that 45 per cent of caregivers in the state also fed their children with food supplement more than four times a day, while only 17 per cent of fathers assisted in feeding of their children.
He called on the local government authorities to put mechanism to boost exclusive breast feeding in all the 31 council areas.
“Let rise up in our various capacities to bring breast feeding supports close to the mothers to improve on the existing gaps in infant and young child feeding practices,” Bassey said.
