FG Registers 360,000 Farmers In Adamawa
The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Adamawa Branch, said 360,000 farmers in the state were registered under the Federal Government’s Growth Enhancement Scheme.
The Chairman of the association, Mr Venantius Jiddere, said this in an interview with the newsmen in Yola at the commencement of the e-wallet based agricultural scheme in the state.
“This is a remarkable event in the lives of over 360,000 farmers who have been registered.
“But out of the total, only 201,555 farmers have been captured and are the beneficiaries of the e-Wallet for the 2013 farming season in the state,’’ Jiddere said.
He said that the remaining un-captured farmers would be recorded in 2014 and would also benefit from the agricultural subsidy enjoyed by their colleagues.
The chairman said the e-wallet exercise was smoothly going on in the state, adding that many peasant farmers who had not benefitted from farm inputs subsidy were now receiving.
“Over 30,000 farmers have received similar subsidy assistance from the state government in the past three years.
“These farmers have also received training and acquired skills in various agricultural ventures,’’ Jiddere said.
He said that the sustenance of agricultural sector was not only about the distribution of fertilisers and the rest, but the transformation from traditional farming to mechanised system.
Jiddere said that there was need for farmers to shift from traditional farming to the advanced system of farming with the support of agricultural research institutes.
He said that the proposed expansion of national agro-based industries would not be realistic if governments at all levels continued to neglect and politicise the agricultural sector.
Jiddere said that most of the agricultural loans given by commercial banks were not getting to the common farmers.
He urged the government to look at the issue of agricultural insurance, pointing out that due to the poor insurance policy, a lot of farmers lost billions of naira yearly.
Jiddere said there was need for government to ensure the realisation of national food security and agricultural development through proper agricultural insurance policy.
He said that Nigeria had the potential of feeding itself and exporting foods, but due to the poor agricultural policy and implementation, the country still imported foods from other nations.

Nigeria’s World Cup Absence A Big Miss – Terry
England and Chelsea legend John Terry has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting that the Super Eagles will be sorely missed as the tournament started yesterday Tidesports source reports.
Eric Chelle’s side finished second in Group C of the CAF World Cup qualifiers behind South Africa, who secured one of the automatic qualification spots for the tournament.
The Super Eagles kept their hopes alive by defeating Gabon in the playoff semi-finals but saw their dreams shattered after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo on penalties in the decisive playoff final.
The defeat condemned Nigeria to a second successive absence from the World Cup, having also failed to qualify for the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The Nigeria Football Federation later challenged DR Congo’s qualification, alleging the use of ineligible players during the campaign. However, the appeal was dismissed, ending any hopes of a late reprieve.
Nigeria will be a big miss. This is a World Cup for participants who haven’t had the opportunity to play in the tournament. I would have loved to see a top team like Nigeria there because they’ve got some great individuals. They’re a great nation. So, yeah, they fall under that category for me.
“I think they are a big miss because Nigeria probably would have gone further in the competition, but unfortunately, one side’s loss is another’s gain.
“I know Mikel Obi is very upset that they’re not there. It means he can’t do more commentating on the World Cup. That’s why he was upset.”
The 2026 World Cup officially begins with co-hosts Mexico.
The historic clash, set to take place at the iconic Estadio Azteca, rekindles memories of the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which ended 1-1. South Africa took the lead through Siphiwe Tshabalala’s stunning strike before Rafael Márquez salvaged a draw for Mexico with a 79th-minute equaliser.
