Rep, Others Flay Etche, Omuma Arrest
Arrest of some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members by some security agents in Etche and Omuma Local Government Areas has come under condemnation by member representing Etche/Omuma Constituency in the House of Representatives Hon. Ogbonna Nwuke.
In a chat with newsmen on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Hon Nwuke described the arrest as witch hunt on supporters of Governor Amaechi.
In his words, “I condemn the act. People should be allowed to express their views. It is against the tenets of our democracy.”
He regretted that the police have continued to show partisanship in the discharge of their duties by indiscriminately arresting pro-Amaechi supporters without recourse to the law, while allowing anti-Amaechi politicians terrorise law-abiding Rivers people without any reprimand.
Also speaking, leader of the Concerned People of Omuma and former aspirant to the state House of the Assembly, Hon. Darlington Nwanju argued that the people of Omuma believe in the application of the principle of law and democracy in the current political dispensation to redress matters that affect aggrieved parties in any form of dispute and disagreement.
He expressed total displeasure and unhappiness over the alleged arrest, intimidation and harassment of two of its members, Mr Leo Anyanwu and Charles Ahamefule, who are in police custody.
He noted that the arrest of Anyanwu and Ahamefule were part of the political machinations of Hon Kelechi Nwogu to further deepen the political crisis in the state.
“We are here to state the continued intimidation, and harassment of the people of Omuma Local Government Area. We want to recall that three years ago, we had several security challenges that had to do with kidnapping and brigandage,” they said.
Another concerned member, Emmanuel Okatta expressed huge disappointment and regrets over harassment, intimidation and unwarranted arrest of the party members.
He stated that Hon Kelechi Nwogu is bent to derail the peace moves and create tension in Omuma.
They, therefore, called on the member of the state House of Assembly to unconditionally release those arrested and ensure immediate withdrawal of all court cases instituted against them.
