Mrs Duke Identifies Cause Of Rising Cancer
The Wife of the former Governor of Cross Rivers State, Mrs Onari Duke has attributed the rising cases of cancer in the country to ignorance.
Speaking with The Tide during “Run for a Cure 5km Charity Walk” at the weekend in Port Harcourt, Mrs Duke who is the founder and Executive Director of Child Survival and Development Organisation (CS-DON) said it was against this background that mire awareness is needed on the dangers of cancer.
She said that people need to be sensitised on the importance of regular medical check up and also to avoid the things that could expose them to the disease.
Duke said the five kilometer walk, the first in the state was organised by the organisation to create more awareness on the risks and spread of the disease in the state.
She said that apart from the cancer awareness programme, other programmes put in place a improve the lot of members of the society particularly women and children, include sensitisation on child rafficking and HIV/AID.
She said, “we are running different programmes under that N.G. there is a hospital for women and children in calabar.” Also speaking, a consultant pediatrician at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Dr. Eke Gracia, said cancer is now affecting every segments of the society.
She urged for early checkup by members of the society and commended the group for the campaign the proprietress of Emmanuel College, Abutoma, Pastor (Mrs) Geraldine Kalango said the programme was organized by the school in conjunction with CS-DON to enlighten members of the public on the dangers of cancer.
