Environmentalist Advocates Massive Tree Planting In Edo
An environmentalist, Mr Festus Ohkemukhokho, has advocated massive planting of trees as a way of checking the menace of erosion in urban and rural communities in Edo State.
Ohkemukhokho, who is the Head of Environmental Services Department in the Etsako West Local Government Council of Edo, made the suggestion in an interview in Auchi, near Benin.
The environmentalist said that the council had begun enlightenment campaigns in Auchi, the council headquarters, on the need for residents to plant ornament trees and shrubs in their premises.
According to him, the roots of such trees will help to hold the soil and make it difficult for flood to wreck havoc and create gully erosion problems.
“Tree planting is particularly needful in an area where the soil is very porous and prone to erosion. “Besides, trees serve as windbreakers and protect structures from being pulled down during the time of excessive wind storm,” he said.
On refuse disposal, Ohkemukhokho appealed to the people not to dump refuse in unauthorised places so as not to block water channels.
He urged Auchi residents to support the council in its environmental protection effort by regularly clearing the drains and cleaning their environment.
