Rainstorm Victims Get N17m Relief Materials
The Plateau Emergency Management Agency on Thursday distributed relief materials worth N17 million to victims of rainstorm in Jengre community, Bassa Local Government Area.
The Tide recalls that in April, rainstorm destroyed about 300 houses and rendered more than 500 residents of the community homeless.
Although no life was lost in the disaster, property worth millions of naira were destroyed.
Presenting the materials, the Executive Secretary of the agency, Alhaji Alhassan Barde, said the gesture was meant to alleviate the sufferings of the victims.
“It is worthy of note that no government can fully compensate disaster victims.
“But it is it hoped that this modest gesture will be appreciated and considered as an indication of government responsiveness to the people’s plight.”
He commended the Plateau Government for empowering the agency to manage emergencies.
He urged the people to put behind them memories of previous disasters and the recent civil disturbances in the state.
The SEMA boss said that the materials included 200 bundles of zinc, 100 bags of cement, 25 cartons of zinc nails, 25 bags of three-inch nails and 25 bags of two-inch nails.
Others were 400 mattresses, 700 nylon mats, 700 blankets, 20 cartons of soap and 80 cartons of excel pomade.
The agency also donated 200 bags of rice, 50 bags of beans, 100 bags of maize, 30 bags of salt and 30 jerrycans of palm oil.
The Chairman of Bassa Local Government Council, Mr Andrew Iza, who received the items, thanked the state government and the agency for their “relentless” efforts in ensuring that relief materials reached the affected victims.
He said that the materials would be handed over to traditional rulers in the affected communities for onward distribution to victims of the rainstorm.
