SEMA Wants Residents To Vacate Flood-Prone Areas
The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has urged people living in low land and other vulnerable areas?to vacate such areas.
The Director-General of SEMA, Mr Vincent Aquah, made the appeal in Calabar on Tuesday when he visited flood disaster victims at the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) staff quarters.
He urged the people to be wary of the increasing rainfall and its attendant flooding that could lead to the des
truction of? lives and property.
According to him, flood water is a dangerous phenomenon and residents?exposed to such situation must take precautionary measures?to avoid damages.
He urged the people?to also imbibe?the habit of de-silting drainage systems and avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
“You should, as a matter of priority, make such a virtue part of your?culture.
The cooperation of everyone is needed to avert possible?flooding on account of the high rainfall pattern predicted?in the country, particularly Cross River State, by?the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), he advised.
He said that?in the event of such flood, over 300 communities in 12 local?government areas could be at risk while lives and property worth millions of naira might?be in jeopardy.
Aquah enjoined all relevant stakeholders on disaster management to?remain committed to the lofty ideals of SEMA.
He said that due to?the impact?of?climate change which had manifested in monumental damage to the environment, it was imperative?for stakeholders to collaborate?for proper management of any disaster.
The 2012 flooding which was aggravated by the discharge of excess water from?Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, ravaged 212 communities in the state, with no fewer than 1,800 houses as well as schools, markets, health centres, and 82,361 farms?submerged.
Also more than?49,918 persons were displaced,13 deaths?recorded and various degrees of injuries sustained as a result of the disaster.
