UNESCO Pledges Support For PH World Book Centre
The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has pledged its technical support to the Port Harcourt Book Centre as the city hosts the World Book Capital 2014.
The UNESCO Director/Country Representative, Professor Hassana Alidou who said this during a fund raising dinner for the Port Harcourt Book Centre organised by the Port Harcourt Literary Society, also said that the organisation did not make a wrong choice in the selection of Port Harcourt as the World Book Capital 2014.
Professor Alidou said that, the event which was the first of its kind in Nigeria also had a brighter prospect of becoming the best in Africa.
The UNESCO representative urged multinational companies operating in the state to contribute towards the success of the event.
She listed some benefits the state would derive from the event to include, the provision of access to world book libraries as well as provision of a multipurpose information for Rivers people.
Also speaking, the chairman of the occasion, Professor E.S. Alagoa described the programme as historic as it coincided with the centenary celebration of the city of Port Harcourt.
Professor Alagoa said that the celebration would bring to the fore some histories of the city as well as expose to the world the rich cultural heritage of Port Harcourt and its cosmopolitan nature.
He also said that the University of Port Harcourt will partner with the Port Harcourt Literary Society to develop the book culture of Rivers State.
The chairman, Board of Trustees of the Port Harcourt Literary Society, Dr. Chidi Amuta described the birth of the society as very significant, as the city has long been known for its role as a watering hole of entertainment and relaxation for operatives in the oil and gas industry.
Dr. Amuta also said that in the last four years, the city had become the destination for an important annual international literary festival.
