Don Solicits Nigeria’s Transportation Reform
A university Don, Prof. Iyiola Oni of the department of Geography, University of Lagos has called for the speedy implementation of plans to revitalise rail services to complement freight by road in Nigeria.
Prof. Oni made this disclosure at the 6th Transquest Annual Transport
Development Symposium in his paper titled: Nigeria’s Transport Masterplan, “the need for an efficient intermodal transport system” at Ikeja Airport Hotel, Lagos, at the weekend.
The academic don said over the years, roads have been the only reliable mode of transportation for cargoes leaving the ports, as a result, transiting of cargoes has not been able to integrate her transport system to cope with the desired speed of cargo movement.
He said that the Nigerian road subsector was belaboured, catering for about 95% of the total logistics needs of the country.
Oni described this as lopsided and discouraging to the promotion of inter-model transportation in Nigeria.
The professor of Geography said that over dependence on the road sub-sector for logistics of goods and materials was-shortening the life span of road infrastructure and increasing expenditures and cost of maintenance.
In his words, ‘over 99 percent of cargoes leaving all the seaports in Nigeria are by road. The lifespan of Nigerian roads has reduced from 25years to about 10 years due to unnecessary pressure from heavy cargo’.
