Senate Okays Okiro, Others For PSC Jobs
The Senate yesterday confirmed the nomination of a former Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro, as chairman, Police Service Commission.
The Senate, however, rejected the nomination of civil rights activist, Otive Igbuzor, who was nominated as the representative of the South South zone.
The decision was taken through a voice vote in the Committee of the Whole, during the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs.
The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Paulinus Igwe (PDP-Ebonyi), said they found the nominees qualified and urged the senators to confirm their appointment.
The Senate President, David Mark, asked whether Igbuzor should be confirmed three times and those who opposed were in the majority.
Sen. Babafemi Ojudu (ACN-Ondo) tried fruitlessly to save Igbuzor through a point of order.
Ojudu had said Igbuzor was one of the most qualified of the nominees, judging by his antecedents both within and outside the country.
The Senate President, however, noted through Order 53(6) that a decision could only be rescinded if it had not been ruled on.
Mark added that if Igbuzor was as qualified as Ojudu said he was, if he was nominated again and brought before the Senate, he (Igbuzor) would be considered.
Okiro will serve as the commission’s chairman, while Mr Yakubu Mohammed, Justice Olufunke Adekeye, Hajiya Aisha Tukur, Mrs Comfort Obi and Torngee Toranyiin, would serve as members.
