Publisher Wants Govt To Harness Maritime Potentials
It was another joyful moments for stakeholders in the maritime sector as performing personalities were honoured during the Easter period.
In its 7th anniversary lecture and Awards put up by the South-South International magazine, it was all glitz and honour for those whom honour is due.
The Publisher and Editor-In-Chief of the magazine, Mr. Ovie Edomi, in his address said the TSSI annual lecture and awards ceremony had been an avenue for discourse on burning issues in both the National polity and the maritime industry.
In his speech which bordered on good governance, Ovie said the rate of unemployment has become unbearable and that the government should give serious concern.
He lambasted the Nigerian political class for brandishing so many characters and personalities, stressing that “Considering the fact that a larger percentage of the resources in Nigeria is in the loots of politicians and public holders, because Nigeria is a public sector, it will be good for government officials to invest in human capital development as well as in agriculture and tourism because in the first place we have the landmass and the resources.
“The maritime sector can also provide millions of employments for our teeming youths and unemployed Nigerians if our maritime potentials are well harnessed”, he charged.
On the lecture series, the Director-General of NIMASA, Mr. Patrick Akpolobokemi who was represented by the Director, Marine Environment Management, Mrs. J.A. Gunwa set the stage rolling by presenting a lecture titled, “How to sustain the development of the Coastal Region in the face of climate change”.
Mrs. Gunwa charged all Nigerians, most especially those living within the coastal regions to protect their environment against climate change by sustaining the natural ecosystem.
While the second lecture titled “Leadership, Power and Service” was delivered by the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Prof. Amos Utuama, who was represented by Barr. Tarire Majomi Awomapa, Special Adviser to the Deputy Governor on Research.
The third lecture titled “Governance and Development, the Roles of the MDAs and Training Institutions was delivered by the Rector of Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron, Mr. Joshua Okpo, represented by the Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Siddi Mkpandiok.
