Armed Forces Deserve Gratitude From Nigerians – Amaechi
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi says the nation owes the Armed Forces gratitude for their commitment and sacrifices to the survival of the country. Governor Amaechi said this, yesterday, while performing the Emblem Appeal launch, marking the 2010, Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at the Alfred Diete-Spiff Civic Centre in Port Harcourt. The Governor who was represented by the commissioner for Housing Mr. Marshall Stanley-Uwon, said the nation would continually be indebted to the fallen heroes for their roles and sacrifices in preserving the nation. He said the fallen heroes paid the supreme sacrifice for others to live and thanked them for the selflessness, patriotism and nationalism, noting that the event was remarkable to appreciate their services to the fatherland. Governor Amaechi said his government is aware of the plight of the legionnaires and the widows of the fallen heroes and advised them to avail themselves of the soft loans given by the Ministry of Women Affairs to engage in small scale business ventures. The State Chief Executive explained that his government’s huge investment in Infrastructure, Education and Health care was borne out of the need to provide facilities for the generality of the people to have better living. Earlier, in his welcome address the state chairman of Nigerian Legion, Col Philemon Chinda Omunakwe (Rtd.) said the event marks the beginning of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations. Col Omunakwe explained that the programme was designed by the Federal Government to remember and honour soldiers that fought the various wars with some laying down their lives for others to live. Highlight of the event was emblem decoration of guests at the function.
