Traders Decry Poor Sanitary Condition Of Fruits Market
Worried by the poor state of the sanitary condition of the popular fruits and vegetables market along Kaduna Street in Port Harcourt, the traders have called on the authorities of Port Harcourt City Local Government to come to their rescue.
A cross section of the traders who spoke to our correspondent said the union leaders in the market has in the past approached the city council authorities for the upgrading of the market.
According to them, over the years the city council have not obliged them.
For Mrs Comfort Chikere (not real name) the poor state of the market was not good because most of what was sold at the market were vegetables and fruits that were consumed raw.
She opined that if the local government could not handle the reconstruction alone then, it should liaise with the Rivers state government.
Efforts to see the chairman of the market union, Comrade Felix proved abortive but a reliable source which asked not to be named said so far the market union has been shouldering the cleanliness of the entire market.
He said during the raining season, the market gets flooded even as he said the market was built on a marshy area.
Effort to speak with the chairman of Port Harcourt City Council on the issue proved abortive as at press time.
However, a source at the council headquarters which craved anonymity said the council was aware of .the plight of the traders at the market.
He said plans were on to upgrade the status of the market as soon as conditions improved.
