Stakeholders Want Speed Limit For Motorcade
Stakeholders yesterday in Abuja called for the introduction of speed limit for motorcade to reduce the high rate of accidents involving top government officials.
The call is contained in a Plan of Action for road safety management which was made available to newsmen at the end of a one-day International Conference to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC.
The conference was organised by the FRSC in conjunction with the International Road Federation (IRF), Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF), the World Bank and the Economic Commission for Africa,
The stakeholders also warned against the use of untrained drivers by top government officials.
They noted that the country’s transport system depended mainly on road for human and cargo movement thereby leading to increase in road traffic accidents.
The stakeholders called for the construction of standard roads with pedestrian walkways, drainages and weigh bridges.
According to the stakeholders, the provisions of such facilities will check the rate of accidents as well as increase the life span of the roads.
“Road infrastructure determines the likelihood of accidents.
“FRSC and the Ministry of Works should collaborate in conceptualising and designing roads,’’ it said.
The stakeholders also stressed the need for collaboration between states and the commission in setting up traffic agencies to deal with traffic offenders and check street trading.
