Faction Wants Govt Intervention In Slaughter Market Crisis
A faction of the Nigeria Butchers Association, Rivers State chapter led by Alhaji Musa Babaoweri has called on the Rivers State Government to intervene in the face-off between it and the other group at the Slaughter Market in Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt, to forestall any loss of lives and property in the area.
One of the factional leaders, Mr Suleiman Adams Sule who spoke with The Tide last Friday, said if urgent steps were not taken, the situation could snowball into a major crisis.
He recalled how some people were stabbed two months ago by suspected hoodlums allegedly hired by one of the factions.
According to him, the crisis in the Slaughter Market is not unconnected with the alleged refusal of their present chairman, Alhaji Maisundu to hand over after the expiration of his second tenure in office.
Adams Sule wondered why the activities of butchers in the state are taking a political shape, saying that the union should be left alone to operate within the ambit of the law that established it.
On why his group is still entering the market against the court orders, he said they are in court already challenging the jurisdiction of the court which banned them from entering the market.
He explained that Maisundu is only employing a delay tactics as butchers in the state are ready to vote him out.
He expressed displeasure over the interference of the Obio/Akpor Council chairman, but want him to be fair to all parties.
The aspiring secretary of the Butchers said the looming crisis at the Trans-Amadi Slaughter, has hindered smooth operation for the over 2000 people who do business in the area.
The Obio/Akpor Local Government chairman, Hon Timothy Nsirim, who also visited the market last Friday, said the only business he had there was to maintain peace and orderliness in the area.
He said, he was also planning to give the Slaughter Market a permanent facelift soon.
