Ogoni Stakeholders Issue Ultimatum On UNEP Report
Stakeholders in Ogoni in Rivers State have said that stiffer measures would be taken against Federal Government, if by the middle of this year, recommendation of the United Nation Environmental Programme (UNEP) is not fulfilled.
Speaking in separate interviews with The Tide yesterday in Port Harcourt, the coordinator of Ogoni Solidarity Forum, Comrade Celestine Akpobari said Ogonis had already drawn their next action to follow, if by June this year, Ogoni areas were not cleaned-up.
He said, Ogonis being patient over the implementation of UNEP reports did not mean they did know what to do to ensure federal attention to the devastated environment that kept the people in abject poverty for years back.
Comrade Akpobari also blamed President Goodluck Jonathan over the delay of the implementation of the report, stressing that if President Jonathan, a core did Niger-Deltan who was aware of the danger posed by oil spillage to the people of the region pretended as novice, “then no president from other parts of the country could solve the region problems”.
The Ogoni leader also said that the people of Ogoni would not support President Jonathan if his 2015 ambition was a reality unless the UNEP reports is implemented.
Another Ogoni stakeholder, the National Vice President of Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Mr Jerry Demma said, the Federal Government just want to see what Ogonis can do over its ability to implement the report.
He called on the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Ameachi use his position as Governors Forum leader to persuade the Federal Government to speedy its implementation action to clean up the environment.
Also decried the delay of the CHVEP report implementation, the new elected Movement of the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) Mr Legbosi Plagbara said the Federal Government should consider the decades exploitation of the area by Shell, and the inhumanity situations the people passed through the years, and ensure that the implementation is done without delay.
