Fresh Crisis In MOSOP?
Amid tension and internal wranglings, leader of the out-gone Provisional Council of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Prof. Ben Naanen, has said Legborsi Pyagbara was duly elected as the President of the movement.
His clarification comes on the heels of agitations by some of the presidential candidates, that the election was inconclusive.
The former president of the council Prof Ben Naanen, while reacting in a telephone interview yesterday said that the election followed due process.
According to him, “it was a delegate’s election. The votes were counted openly and Legborsi Pyagbara won by considerable margin as witnessed by everyone present. He was inaugurated as MOSOP President.”
However, in a petition, one of the presidential candidates, Chief Mike Lube Nwidobe, described the declaration of Mr Pyagbara as the movement’s president as fraudulent and a calculated attempt to cause unrest in Ogoniland, claiming that the election was inconclusive.
He alleged that the election, which was scheduled for the 3rd of January, could not hold, while Naanen’s attempt to swear-in Pyagbara on the 4th of January as MOSOP President was stopped by Ogoni people and security agencies.
Nwidobe contended that, this development later led to the swearing-in of Chief Fortune Chujor as the movement’s acting president.
He noted that his lawyers had been instructed to institute a legal proceeding against Professor Naanen and Legborsi Pyagbara.
Meanwhile, the law firm of Okere and Okere, Eboh Chambers has given a seven-day ultimatum to Prof. Naanen to conduct fresh elections into the office of the President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP).
Similarly, the law firm has warned Mr Pyagbara to stop impersonating as MOSOP president.
Copies of the ultimatum which were said to have been served on Chief Fortune Chujor and Prince Kabari, MOSOP Accountant, also urged Naanen to refute his earlier statement on the alleged swearing-in of Legborsi Pyagbara as MOSOP President or face legal action.
It further warned Pyagbara to desist from parading himself and impersonating as MOSOP president.
