Speaker Urges Fight Against Widowhood Practices
The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Tonye Harry has called on widows in the state to form a formidable body that would champion its cause against evil practices metted out to them.
Rt Hon Harry made the call during a courtesy visit to him by widows as part of activities marking the International Widows Day.
The Speaker, who described widowhood as a stressful life transition which no one prepares for, advised the women to take advantage of he micro credit loan provided for them by the government as it was the first time such gesture is taking place in the state.
The Speaker, who made a donation of N500,000 to the widows, said that the Rivers State House of Assembly is ready to partner with them by making laws for their protection and make the micro-credit scheme a yearly and continuous programme.
Earlier, the commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Manuela Izunwa in her address described the day as one set aside internationally to address the inhuman treatment widows are subjected to and to attract the attention of the government.
Mrs Izunwa acknowledged the immense support of the state government and by extension the legislature for enacting laws for improve the conditions of women and called on the speaker to ensure that laws stopping evil practices against widows were fully implemented.
In her vote of thanks the permanent secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Dr Pat Wudhiga Ogbonnaya, thanked the governor Amaechi-led government for giving the widows in the society a chance to live a comfortable life, praying that God will bless them as they continue the fight against evil practices on widows.
