PEPFAR Condemns Stigmatisation Against HIV Victims
A health organisation, United States president’s Emergency Plan for AIDs Relief (PEPFAR) has urged members of the society to desist from stigmatising and discriminating against HIV/AIDS victims so that they would not be despaired.
The consultant of American corner in the South-South and South/East of Nigeria, Mrs Chinwe. A. Agbakoba, stated this Thursday, in her welcome address to mark the World AIDs Day 2009, with the sub-Theme-”Working together against HIV stigma and discrimination,” at Muriela Hotel, in Port Harcourt.
Mrs Agbakoba expressed the need to sensitise medical doctors and nurses on how to handle HIV/AID infected persons so that they would not be stigmatised, but rather should be given encouragement to enable them mix up freely with members of the society and go about their normal business.
According to her, PEPFAR has brought hope and life to our infected brothers and sisters by making them understand that HIV infection does not translate into a death sentence, but rather to ensure that infected persons continue to live positively and contribute to the society.
She noted that stigmatisation is one of the greatest problem of HIV/AIDs that prevents people from coming out to seek for help. She, therefore, charged all leaders in various capacities to join hands to fight stigmatisation and discrimination against those living with the virus.
“It starts with you, resolve today to do away with stigmatisation and discrimination and then you can influence others, you can not impact what you don’t believe yourself,” she added.
Also speaking, a representative of Rivers State Agency for the Control of AIDs, Mrs Ebere enjoined everybody especially leader in any circumstance to be focused and direct the people on the right path to enable them to be free from been infected with the virus.
Mrs Ebere further urged leaders to position themselves as worthy servants and ensure they carry out the campaign to all nooks and cranmies to sensitise people on the implication of casual sex.
In her contribution, Ms Hilda Dokubo, suggested that SACA, NACA, PEPFAR, Humanitarian organizations and other HIV/AIDs controlling agencies should have as many specialist trained doctors as possible who would be able to handle HIV/AID infected patients friendly with out discrimination.
