Local investors have called on Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) of Nigeria to make available raw materials map of Rivers State to guide interested local investors on available resource outside oil, to invest on.
The call was contained in a communique produced at the end of Raw Materials Research and Development Council of Nigeria held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
According to the communique such map has become imperative in view of the growing desire by both local and foreign investors and the call for more investors outside the oil sector.
It said a part from tapping such resources, there was need to come up with better packaging and marketing strategies of some goods already available.
Other issues raised in the communique included effective training on raw material processing and putting in place better infrastructure as roads, energy, water supply for micro, small and medium scale enterprises to take shape in the state and the country in general.
In his keynote address, Dr Francis Beka noted that about 33 mineral commodities are at various stages of exploration and exploitation in over 450 locations in Nigeria, but that window of opportunities associated with the growth of solid minerals cut across the realm of national development issues especially the key growth sectors.
Dr Beka who is of the Department of Geology and Centre for Petroleum Geosciences, University of Port Harcourt urged government to demonstrate strong commitment and political will for accelerated development of the solid mineral sector for export as foreign exchange earner.
Earlier, the Director-General of Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Prof. Azikiwe Onwualu expressed dismay that there has been persistent criticism on Nigeria’s overdependence on oil-based revenue such that the agricultural sector that used to be the mainstay of the nation’s economy remain neglected.
He reiterated that one day the oil wells in the country would dry off and the nation would suffer stressing that, “mismanagement of the Largesse from oil proceeds and resultant degradation due to oil drilling and gas flaring has compounded the nation’s problem.
