Rivers
Enitonna To Become Co-Educational School
Enitonna High School, Borokiri, Port Harcourt, may soon become a co-educational institution,
if the Rivers State House of Assembly accepts the recommendations contained in
the report of its House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions.
Presenting the report to Plenary,
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Michael Okey-Chinda said the Assembly should
direct the Ministry of Education to revert the school to a co-educational
institution.
Hon. Chinda disclosed that the state
government has no female school from Mile 1 Diobu to Borokiri neighbourhoods in
Port Harcourt township, noting that Enitonna High School was established as a
Co-educational institution until 1968 when it was converted to boys school.
The Committee also urged the House to
direct the Ministry of Education to carry out immediate renovation of the
school before reverting to co-educational to encourage parents who are not able
to afford sponsorship of their female wards in private schools benefit from
government free education.
Hon. Chinda who represents Obio/Akpor
Constituency 11, noted that the premises of Enitonna High School, had become a
colony of schools as it hosts four other schools namely, Community Secondary
School (Jnr.) Borokiri with over 3,000 students, UPE Primary Schools 1 & 2
as well as a Nursery school.
The Committee also recommended that the
Ministry of Education should immediately confiscate or order the evacuation of
all vehicles parked in the school premises and reconstruct the perimeter fence
to forestall further trespass on the school land while the four school
operating unofficially in the premises be evicted.
Hon. Chinda explained that the school
if properly maintained can accommodate female students from JSS1 to SS3, adding
that water front dwellers now use the school field as thorough-fare while
commercial vehicle operators and private car owners use it as parking lots and
workshop.
