Develop Swampy Communities, FG, NDDC Advised
The Federal Government and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) have been tasked to take development of the swampy and mongrove communities in Niger Delta region seriously.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cok Serve Limited in Rivers State, Mr. Chidi Okoroh made the call yesterday in an interview with The Tide On Sunday in Port Harcourt.
Mr. Okoroh, who noted with dismay the poor conditions and hardship of the people living in the swampy and mangrove areas of the region, said that residents in the areas are entirely denied better living standard as humans.
The company’s CEO commended some oil companies including his company, (Cok Serve) for empowerment of youths and developmental projects in some swampy communities, and appealed to state governments in the region to give special priority to the development of the areas.
He noted that most swampy communities in the region were very unique, as they could not compared to other areas in the country.
Mr. Okoroh called for more funds for the development of Niger Delta, particularly, the swampy and mangrove areas, considering that the major resources were extracted from the area for the services of the nation.
On post-amnesty programme, Mr. Okoroh advised that government should ensure that fulfilled promises made during the amnesty programme.
He expressed fears that if government failed to consolidate on the relent peace in the region with concrete infrastructural developments, the situation could degenerate to what it was previously.
He called on stakeholders, to build unity of purpose by ensuring that funds meant for development of the Niger Delta are utilized judiciously.
To the youths, Mr. Okoroh advised that they should be transparent and sincere in their fight for a genuine course and shun criminality and kidnapping in the region.
He thanked the youths of the region, particularly the Ex-militants for embracing peace in the country.
