A’Ibom Assembly Laments Non-Implementation Of Oil Companies’ Law
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has lamented
non-implementation of the Oil Companies Regulation of Business, Registration
and Vessels Plying Levy Law 2006.
Chairman House Committee on Environment, Mr Kufreabasi Etuk,
brought the information as matter of urgent public importance at the plenary
session of the house in Uyo.
Etuk said that the law, which should have taken effect since 2006, required every company operating in Akwa Ibom to open and maintain a functional office in the state.
“Every vessel plying the territorial waters of the state for
the purpose of petroleum, prospecting, exploration and drilling, are required
to register with the state’s internal revenue service,’’ he stated.
The lawmaker said that the law also established the oil
companies/oil servicing companies’ regulations/monitoring committee with
mandate to investigate and recommend appropriate sanctions on defaulting
organisations.
Also contributing, the Speaker, Mr Samuel Ikon, said the law
would have sought to raise the revenue base of the state.
“If the law is implemented it will create employment
opportunities for the youths, thereby reducing youth restiveness. “
He lamented that oil companies doing business in the state
were generating effluents and polluting the environment.
The speaker urged the house members to thoroughly look at
the law and make inputs on how it could be implemented without further delay.
The house adjourned sitting till October11.
