FRSC Forecloses Waiver For Erring Motorists
There is no more waiver for erring motorists and other road
users booked by the Federal Road Safety Corps, an official said recently in
Lagos.
Mr Onanuga Abayomi, Zonal Coordinator of the Zone 2 of the
FRSC (Special Marshal), said this during a visit to the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN), Lagos Office.
Abayomi said that granting of waivers had been a major
hindrance to the enforcement of FRSC laws.
He said that FRSC had waived fines and other punishments for
erring motorists due to intervention from well connected people.
He, however, gave the assurance that the situation had
changed.
“ Once you are booked by an operative, you must pay the
fine, not even the corps marshal can waive it,’’ he said.
He hoped that the development would promote discipline among
road users.
The special marshal said that Nigeria had always enacted the
relevant laws, but had not the political will to enforce them.
Abayomi, a lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Olabisi
Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun, also said that the corps was determined
to check abuses by its special marshals.
He was reacting to an allegation that some individuals
became special marshals to be able to beat the law.
“ It is an offence for any marshal to display his kits on
the dashboard of his vehicle. We’ll confiscate them, if we see such,’’ he said.
He said that some special marshals in the zone had been
deregistered for abuses, but he did not give the statistics.
“ Some have faced disciplinary committees and were shown the
way out.
“ Every special marshal has a pin with which we can fish him
out in any part of the country,’’ he said.
Abayomi said that individuals without a means of livelihood
were not registered as special marshals to prevent them from accepting
gratifications.
