Commissioner Canvasses Sustainable Peace
Certain critical factors that could entrench sustainable peace in every society have been identified to include justice, accountable governance, protection of human rights, equitable distribution of resources, security and education, among others.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Joeba West, made this assertion in an address she delivered at the seminar on “Ensuring National Peace And Stability: The Role Of Women Journalists,” organized by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State at the Ministry of Women Affairs auditorium last week.
Mrs West used the occasion to call on all Nigerians to embrace peace, saying that every human disagreement, aggression and wars were usually settled on the negotiation table. She said that a peaceful and stable nation would achieve sustainable development faster than a war-torn nation, and pleads for a joint venture with NAWOJ in sensitizing the people through the media towards imbibing the culture of peace. The commissioner also called on NGOs, well meaning Nigerians to condemn the state of insecurity in Nigeria by contributing their quota towards ending violence.
“Our religious institutions should inculcate this peaceful co-existence lifestyle in their members to build a nation where peace and justice reigns,” she added.
Meanwhile, the seminar was part of the female journalists determined positive role in a collective effort to achieve peace in Nigeria.
