Lagos Seaports Handles 63,220 Imported Vehicles In Six Months
Lagos seaports handled a total of 63,220 units of both brand new and used vehicles imported into the country within the first half of the year 2012.
A document by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) made available to The Tide correspondent indicated that the highest figure of 12,497 vehicles was recorded in the month of June, as against 11,578 units recorded in May.
A breakdown of the figure in June showed that the terminal handled a total of 4,321 units of new vehicles while the figure for the used vehicles stood at 2,946 units.
The Tide gathered that Five Star Logistics Limited at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos the foremost RoRo terminal lead with an increasing figure of 7,267 units of both new and used vehicles, while another vehicles importing terminal at the Tin Can Island Port, Port and Terminal Multi-services Limited recorded 3,900 units of unclassified new and used vehicles.
It was further learnt that another vehicle importing terminal at the Lagos Ports, Standard Flour Mills Limited occupied the third place with an importation of 910 units of used vehicles in June.
Our correspondent reports that in June 2012, MV Dragon for the first time in the year recorded a total of 420 units of vehicles from the vessel at the Tin Can Island Container (TICT) terminal.
It was also gathered that in January this year, Lagos seaports recorded 9,625 units of vehicles, 9,615 in February and in March 10,393 units were imported while in April, the terminal recorded 9,512 units of vehicles.
Meanwhile, Port Harcourt Port which used to be the hub of imported vehicles had not recorded any vessel for decades, which had been given the manager of the Port and their concessionaires a great concern.
