NSE Seeks Govt Support
The National President of the Nigeria Society of Engineers
(NSE), Mr Mustapha Shehu, in Abuja
called on the government to support the society to ensure national development.
Shehu made the call at the opening ceremony of the 2012
Engineers’ Week and annual meeting of the society with the theme,“ The Impart
of Sharp Practices on the Infrastructural Development of the Nation’’.
“Some of us engineers were trained and are practising
abroad. We have decided to practise at home because we have faith in and love
for this country.
“If one is qualified to practise in Nigeria, he is qualified
to practise anywhere in the world and I think government priority should be to
support and encourage those who love the country,’’ he said.
Shehu urged the government and the general public to
approach the society for registered engineers whenever they need their services
to execute projects as “there are quacks in the profession’’.
The guest speaker, Mr Abdul Alli, said that epileptic power
supply, bad roads, polluted environment, abandon projects were all fruits of
sharp practices
He lamented that in spite of the availability of anti-
corruption agencies, sharp practices were still getting stronger in the
country.
Alli recommended that the NSE beam its searchlight on the
abuse in the profession and make examples of quacks.
He also appealed to the government to deny quacks employment
and contracts, saying the NSE should be consulted before awarding contracts to
people.
Mr Emeka Ozioko, the chairman NSE, Abuja chapter, stressed
the need to eradicate sharp practices in Nigeria.
“Any measure taken to uproot all forms of sharp practices in
all sectors of our national life is the right step in the right direction.
He said the theme of the week – The Impact of Sharp
Practices on the Infrastructural Development of the Nation -captured the
essence of President Goodluck Jonathan’s efforts at achieving marked reduction
in the level of corruption in the country.
