Edo Harps On Implementation Of Child Rights Law
The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social
Development, has restated its commitment to ensuring strict implementation of
the Child Rights Law in the state.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Ebomoyi
Idundun, said in Benin that committees had been set up to monitor and protect
children against all forms of abuse, including street hawking.
She said the governor, through the Ministry of Women Affairs
and Social Development, was currently promoting awareness on the danger of
child abuse and its implication on children and the society.
“The government has put in place implementation committees
and Child Rights Watch groups in the 18
local government areas of the state to make the Child Rights Act effective.
’
Idundun stressed the need for concerned members of the
public to report cases of abuse of children to the police, rescue centres and
other institutions that could provide redress.
She said that the Child Rights Act, which was passed into
law in October, 2007 in the state, incorporated all the rights and
responsibilities of children.
The permanent secretary added that the law provided for the
development, survival, protection and participation rights of children in Edo.
According to her, the ministry has replicated the Child
Rights Law Committee and Child Rights Watch Group in all the 18 local
government to ensure full and strict implementation.
Idundun told parents to take advantage of the schools that
had been provided by the government to send their wards to school, and warned
that any child found hawking during school hour would be held and sanctions
meted out to the parents of the child.
She stressed the need for government to put policies and
measures in place to reduce poverty in the country to enable parents provide
qualitative education for their wards.
Meanwhile, the Edo State House of Assembly has ordered the
State Civil Service Commission to release the letter of appointment belonging
to a physically challenged person, Mr Odaro Osemwengie .
This is contained in a resolution passed by the House in Benin. The resolution followed a petition
entitled “Refusal of the Health Management Board to give employment,” signed by
Mr Odaro Osemwengie.
Considering the report, the Chairman of the House Committee
on Health, Mr Bamidele Oloruntoba, said Governor Adams Oshiomhole had
graciously approved the appointment of Odaro in November 2011.
Oloruntoba said the Health Management Board could not employ
Odaro due to the lack of relevant qualification hence the Civil Service
Commission was directed to employ him.
He said the committee discovered that since December 2011
when the head of service gave the directive to the Civil Service Commission for
immediate action, it had not implemented the governor’s approval.
The committee, therefore, recommended that the Civil Service
Commission should release the appointment letter to the applicant within seven
working days. The House unanimously adopted the recommendation with changes and
amendment.
