ABUCCIMA Decries Harsh Economic Conditions For Manufacturers
The Abuja Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture (ABUCCIMA), has bemoaned the prevailing economic conditions in the country which had made business climate unfriendly to manufacturers.
ABUCCIMA President, Mr Solomon Nyagba said this in Abuja when he led some executive members of the association on a courtesy call on the Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Dr Samuel Ortom.
Nyagba, a former Managing Director of Benue Cement Company (BCC), lamented the state of infrastructure, power supply, high cost of production and unfavourable competition from imported goods.
The chamber president called on the Federal Government to urgently do something about the situation, noting with concern that these issues were frustrating the efforts of local manufacturers in the country.
“As manufacturers and business operators in Nigeria, we find ourselves faced with several challenges and at the receiving end of a very harsh economic environment.’’
Nyagba, who nevertheless commended government for some steps taken in addressing the challenges said, “there is an urgent need to fast-track the process.
“Our visit today is partly to intimate the minister on the extent of our preparedness toward hosting the 7th Abuja International Trade Fair scheduled for Sept. 27 to Oct. 8.
“We request the minister to urgently consider and approve logistic support to the trade fair as contained in our request for sponsorship.
“We also request the minister to kindly direct all agencies under his ministry to participate in the fair.’’
He said that the fair was capable of creating multiple job and business opportunities for Nigerians and would reduce poverty.
Nyagba called on government to assist the organisation in the construction of an International Trade Fair Complex and a convention trade fair Centre.
“This will enable the association to stop using the Old Parade Ground in Area 11 for future Trade Fair events,’’ he said.
Dr Ortom, in his response, assured Nigerians that government was doing everything possible to tackle the identified problems.
He called on stakeholders to join hands with government to address the issues raised by the ABUCCIMA team.
On the trade fair complex, he assured the team that government was creating adequate awareness in the area of construction to attract foreign investors.
“We can liaise with some investors who are willing to invest to see how best you can construct a befitting trade fair complex that will be of international standard,’’ he said.
