Mrs Amaechi Seeks Collaboration On Waste Disposal
The wife of the Rivers State Governor Dame Judith Amaechi has called for collaborative effort to check the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in Port Harcourt City and its environs.
Speaking at the Stakeholders Forum on waste management in Port Harcourt metropolis organised by the Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority (RSESA) last Tuesday in Port Harcourt Dame Judith Amaechi who represented her husband at the forum said that the task of keeping Port Harcourt clean must be seen as a collective one.
While thanking the Authority for the Forum, she emphasised the need for the engagement of professionals to design ways of managing environmental wastes.
The wife of the Governor who declared the forum opened also called for more advocacy programme to enlighten the people on the importance of environmental cleanliness.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Hon. Victoria Nyeche said that the House would soon complete the amendment of the state Environment laws to reflect the current realities in the state.
Hon. Nyeche further expressed the hope that the forum would help to educate the people of the state on the challenges of environmental cleanliness.
In his address, the Chairman of the Rivers State Envrionmental Sanitation Authority. Mr. Isobo Jack said that the Agency has intention to create a pilot scheme zone inside Port Harcourt metropolis in which waste collection and evacuation shall be carried out.
The proposed scheme, accorded to him, will cover the entire old Port Harcourt township, Borokiri, Diobu, the entire stretch of Aba road, Ikwerre road amongst others.
Mr. Jack said that time has come for all hands to be on deck to clean Port Harcourt and its environs.
“The time has come therefore for us to examine ourselves and take appropriate decisions as government had as citizens to confront our challenges and assure our responsibilities to our environment”.
