Council Seeks Policies On Malaria Eradication
The Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON), has called for more government policies toward eradication of the malaria pandemic in the country.
EHORECON’s Registrar Augustine Ebisike made the call in an interview with our source on Sunday in Benin, Edo State.
He said governement needed to change its policy thrust in its quest to eradicate the malaria and other prevalent diseases.
Ebisike said that government should reverse its policy thrust from curative measures to the preventive concept which were in place in the early 60’s and 70’s.
He said that government should encourge the use of sanitary inspectors as was in the 70’s, rather than flood the country with Chinese drugs.
The registrar said “the way we are tackling the issue of fighting malaria is different from the way we should be tackling the issues and get result; the best way is for government to employ more health officers and give them facilities to work with.
“They need to move from one village to another and enforce these laws that are still there.
“If we achieve that, we won’t only be rolling back mosquitos or malaria, we will be rolling back choleria, rolling back lassa fever and other prevalent diseases across the nation.
“All these will go in one fell swoop, but unfortounately, people are not listening to us.
“Government believes that provision of drugs as anti-malaria and sharing same to all the communities, they will address the problem? No, it won’t.
“But when you turn around to say we should ensure that there should be no mosquitoes in all the local government areas. Let the gutters be clean. ‘
“When we come out to say let there be no stagnant water and that we are going to keep every where clean. Nobody will clap for you.
“But that is the key that will work,’’ said.
