Market Chairman Decries Stalls Reallocation Plan
The chairman of the Mile I Market Traders Association Chief Young Obene Georgewill has alerted the public and the government of an alleged plot by some person to stop the movement of traders to the new market.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen last Friday in Port Harcourt, Chief Georgewill said that some of these people had gone as far as inciting traders against themselves over the allocation of the stalls in the new market.
“Evil minded people are behind this rumour, but they will never succeed, as far as l am concerned, there is no confusion”, he said.
The association chairman said that, his committee is doing its best to put things in order, but it would take a month for traders to fully relocate to the new building.
“All the traders are cooperating with the market committee. Those allocated stalls will move, nobody will be intimidated”, he said.
He also used the occasion to warn trouble makers to stay off the area in their own interest.
Meanwhile, Chief Georgewill has urged the government to immediately commence the construction of the second phase of the market.
He said that traders using the area designated for the second phase were ready to move their wares to designated places to enable the government commence the construction of the second phase of the market.
The Tide however observed that the relocation of traders to the new market building was slow, no reason was however given for this.
Some of the traders declined comment on the situation but instead directed the reporter to the Market Traders Association’s chairman.
