Illegal Structures: Offenders To Face Prosecution
A mobile court to try anyone arrested by the Rivers State Government Inter-ministerial Taskforce is to be set up to sanitise Port Harcourt and its environs.
The committee drawn from the Ministry of Urban Development and Physical Planning, Environmental Sanitation Authority, TIMARIV and the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation began massive operations along Ikwerre Road, during which over 30 persons were arrested and 11 destitutes relocated to rehabilitation homes.
Speaking to newsmen at the scene of the operations, the Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Dr. Tammy Danagogo said those arrested would be summarily tried and punished as stipulated in the relevant laws of the state.
The move, he said was to serve as a deterrent to residents who had proved recalcitrant to efforts to rid Port Harcourt of illegal structures street trading and illegal parking of vehicles.
The combined operations, he said would not only be carried out on daily basis for six months, but would be very intensive and extensive to drive home government’s renewed determination to check all problems associated with trading and erection of illegal structures, adding that it would no longer be business as usual.
He commended Governor Chibuike Amaechi for mustering the political will and providing the resources to restore the Garden City status of Port Harcourt.
Other co-ordinators of the operations, the chairman of the state Environmental Sanitation Authority, Mr. Isobo Jack, the Controller-General of TIMARIV, Mr. Nelson Jaja and the Director, Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mr. Godwin Echenwo in their separate speeches appealed to residents of Port Harcourt to obey the laws of the state or be prepared to face the music.
