RSG Restates Commitment To Transparency
The Rivers State Government says its policies and programmes will remain open for public scrutiny in line with the freedom of information law.
The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari who said this during the Rotary magazine month organised by the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt District 9140 on Monday, said it was for this that the Ministry organised the first ever information summit in Nigeria.
The Commissioner who was represented by her special Assistant, Mrs Gina Daka Osika said that the society placed high premium on the media as it acts as the hope of the masses.
“When all hope appears lost in a polity, the media comes in handy to salvage the situation as was experienced in Nigeria during the General Abacha era,” she said.
She described the theme of the conference which is “The media as the conscience of the society” as very apt “we are talking about a situation where the media serves as the voice of the voiceless. A situation where the expectations of the people are highlighted.
“The ills of the society exposed irrespective of who is involved” she said.
In his lecture entitled, “The Mass Media as the Conscience of the Society”, the head of Mass Communication Department Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Dr. G. B. Okon listed the conditions which the media must jealously guard to remain the conscience of the society.
These include, balanced news content, reinforce the framework for institutionalized self regulation, guide, adjudicate and advise government and policy makers on the dynamics and mechanics of policy formulation and implementation, while stressing consistently to acknowledge errors of judgement through rejoinders and retractions.
The rest are; avoiding activities and actions that lead to conspiracies and spirals of silence while creating fora for critical discourse analysis popularly known and referred to as the “peoples parliament” thus allowing for a free market place of ideas.
