Amaechi Tasks FRSC On Enlightenment, Safety
Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi, has called on the Federal Road Safety Commission to enlighten members of the public on the multiple roads and intersections in the state in order to decongest traffic.
Governor Amaechi made the call yesterday when the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Rivers State Sector Command, led by its new Commander, Mrs N Wakawa, paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Port Harcourt.
Represented by his Deputy, Engr Tele Ikuru, Governor Amaechi, who is also Chairman Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), said his administration had created new roads, expanded existing ones and done a lot to ease traffic across the state, stressing that members of the public needed to know that there were alternative traffic routes to use to get to their destinations without getting stuck in traffic on one road”.
He encouraged the FRSC to work harmoniously with the state Traffic Management Authority (TIMARIV) to finetune traffic modalities, assuring that his administration would continue to partner with federal agencies for the good of the people, adding that “the interest of the people will always be paramount in our plans”, expressing optimism that the newly deployed sector commander would discharge her duties effectively.
Earlier, Mrs Wakawa, said the essence of the courtesy call was to inform the governor of her new assignment in the state, expressing delight at the goodwill enjoyed by her predecessor and the efforts of the state government in traffic management, and commended the government for establishing the TIMARIV.
She regretted the congestion still witnessed on the roads despite the efforts of the government , stressing that she was hopeful that with the collaboration between the FRSC and TIMARIV, traffic jams in the state would soon be brought under control, noting that roads congestion undermined Port Harcourt’s economic viability and posed challenges to security, adding that “we will ensure that traffic is properly managed”.
