AFAN Boss Urges LGs To Support Agric Dev
The Coordinator, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Edo North chapter, Alhaji Abdulahi Mohammed, has appealed to the states and local governments to support the Federal Government to develop agriculture.
Mohammed, who made the call in an interview with newsmen recently in Auchi, Edo, stressed that the Federal Government alone could develop agriculture. .
“If the plan by the Federal Government to revolutionise the agricultural sector must be achieved, the three tiers of government must key into it.
“The states and local governments must be ready to give their support for the vision to develop agriculture to be realised.
The coordinator, who lauded Federal Government Agriculture Transformation Action Plan (ATAP) to revamp sector, tasked the local government councils to change their attitude towards the sector to ensure its growth.
He accused some councils of not doing enough to change the fortunes of the sector.
“What the authorities of most of the council areas do is to make budgetary provision for agriculture without actually implementing same.
“Go round some council areas, you will hardly find any agric project. Farmers do not get assistance from them.
“These budgetary provisions for the sector, especially in Edo, one does not know what they do with it.
“‘This is even more painful because they have agriculture department in the council with a Head of Department but all seems to be doing nothing to help the sector,“ he alleged.
Reacting to the comments, Mr Oseni Abdulahi, the supervisor of agriculture in Etsako West local government area of Edo, debunked the allegation that some council areas were not doing anything to develop the sector.
“As I speak with you, we have concluded plans to assist farmers in my council with farm tools such as chemicals, hoes and cutlasses and fertilisers, among others.
